Only certain climates and soils lend themselves well for truffle cultivation. In North America, only the Mid-Atlantic States have proven to be reliable, with ideal soil types and climatic conditions. Truffles have been produced from our trees in North and South Carolina, western Tennessee, and Virginia five years after planting, and several more orchards in West Virginia, Maryland and Delaware are close to production.

Several soil types are acceptable. Generally soils in the US have to be amended with lime. Garland Truffles has pioneered the method to modify the soil in the most beneficial way to insure excellent growth and early production. Moisture throughout the year is essential. The orchard must have a source of clean water for irrigation. We recommend a variety of mulch materials to be used for moisture conservation, weed control, and soil aeration.

Good drainage is a must, as the trees cannot tolerate standing water.
